How To Get Started With Academic Writing

If you are looking into joining the world of academic writing then this article is for you.

Pretty much for the last weeks, I have been much on Twitter and a lot of people have been raising a bunch of question on how to get started with academic writing. I know with the pandemic coming in and other staffs cropping up people have found it hard coping up.

In this article, I am going to show you what it takes and what you need to know to get started with academic writing.

Academic writing is a very unique and often complex as opposed to other kinds of writing such as blog writing.

A lot of people think it is easy but that is not the case. It is much similar to anything. First, it needs patience to master the craft.

I remember when I started it out and putting those first thoughts through the keyboards was very challenging, for the best part of now I can write down a thousand words essay like a charm in no minute with minimum effort. So just to wrap up that just like anything it needs time to master the craft.

Remember the adage “Rome was not built in a day”.

In this article, I will discuss some of the most important topics and break them down for you so you can get started up to speed.

What to focus on

Grammar

Firstly, you need to improve your grammar to ensure quality in your paper. The client always doesn’t care so long as you provide quality paper.

I would suggest you check out Grammarly or Ginger. They provide free and premium services for grammar corrections.

Their services are good and they can help improve the quality of your paper. Similarly, they can help you check on some mistakes which would otherwise make your work look stupid.

Even when writing this blog, I ensured I passed the paper through Grammarly to shed some light on the grammar mistakes I made.

Plagiarism

This is one of the most talked-about and has a worse academic influence on paper. Plagiarism in simple terms is using someone else work like yours and not giving them the credit.

To ensure that you provide a quality paper, you should ensure that you cite sources and thoughts from outside correctly according to the paper format you are writing on (MLA, APA, Harvard, Chicago, IEEE).

Before you submit your paper, I would advise you to pass your paper through a plagiarism checker to ensure that your paper is 0% plagiarized.

Some free plagiarism checker you can leverage.

Plagiarism is a serious academic offence and can lead to your client getting 0%. This would be bad for your reputation as well as the clients.

Always strive to ensure you provide plagiarism-free paper.

Attention to instructions

Before getting your hands dirty with the job, it is recommended to ensure you have a better understanding of what the paper wants including the format (MLA, APA, Harvard, Chicago, IEEE), type of paper (essay, annotated bibliography, argumentative) and other specific details that the clients provide for the job.

How to improve your writing

Improving your writing is not always a simple thing and just like any other thing needs patience.

How to ensure you improve your writing:

1. Read a lot from novels to books. They can help improve your vocabulary and understanding of various things

2. Write a lot. This can be in form of blog posts or other kinds of writing

3. Listen to podcasts and read other people work. this can also help you improve your writing style and hugely improve your writing game.

Academic writing is always marred with a lot of strictness and needs a lot of quality in your work to ensure you get the big cash. If you provide quality in your work, I surely guarantee that you will surely thrive in the business and pocket the huge dollars.

Different paper formats

You should be able to know how to write in different paper formats

Some of the most popular formats include (APA, MLA, CHICAGO, Harvard) among other various formats. You should familiarize yourself with these formats.

On the other hand, you should focus on providing quality papers depending on various topics and subjects of study.

Where to Find Work

There are many places to find loads of academic work, especially during the high seasons. Many job websites have these kinds of academic works and don’t need any penny from you to get started. All you will ever need is an account and the skill to provide quality paper.

Some of the websites you can check out includes the following:

  • Upwork
  • Fiver
  • Essaypro
  • Essayshark
  • Papersowl
  • Writedom
  • Studypool

These are just a few of the websites that provide academic jobs and needs no penny to start earning.

On the other hand, when I was starting, I got most of my help from my friends who have been in the business for some time. So, in case you have a friend in the business, reach out and if he/she isn’t a gatekeeper you will find help.

They can also wire you some gigs to start with and improve.
